Subterranean Shunning-Grounds

The sewers under the capital: the Catacombs, the Dung Eater's cell, the boss at the bottom and the shaft behind his altar, then the moat the freed man calls you to.

The sewers under the capital are a long way down and they hit hard: this route comes at capital level, 90 to 110, and the enemies don't give you much room. Open every shortcut as you pass it. Rest at each grace too, because the later sections lean on them.

These sewers outlast the capital

Nothing below the street changes when the Royal Capital does: an open manhole up there still drops into these tunnels, and the graces stay. Light all of them on this visit anyway. If a row here beats you for now, you can come back to it.

Grace: Underground RoadsideArea

Head north-east: the grace is in a room on your left.

Leave the door at the bottom shut in this run

This shaft ends at a sealed door below the Frenzied Flame Proscription grace. Take the loot and light the grace, but don't open that door, and don't strip off your armor down there. Opening it costs you Melina for good, and it rules out the ending this run is working toward. A later run comes back to it on purpose.

With the man freed, go to the Hold and look in his room past the Twin Maiden Husks. It is empty, and a message there points to the outer moat. Read it before you go on: the invasion follows that message. Then the moat rows run in this order.

Talk to Boggart before the invasion

The Dung Eater's invasion at the moat ends Boggart's quest, so have his last talk first. His Seedbed Curse, Iron Ball, Blackguard's Iron Mask, Blackguard's Bell Bearing and Ash of War: Braggart's Roar come from him then, and the curse is lost if the invasion happens before Boggart: outer moat, in the Capital Outskirts section. The invasion fires when you walk out into the middle of the moat, so keep to the bank until he is bound.

Location
Capital Outskirts · Outer moat – Fast travel to the Minor Erdtree Church grace and ride south to the moat, then stay on the bank by his fire and don't hit him. Talk to Boggart until he says the man is lurking nearby, then rest and come back. He is bound to a chair: talk to him again.
Why you can lose it
If the Dung Eater invades at the moat before Boggart has moved there, his body never carries this curse, so keep to the order here. If you lose it, the sixth curse in Elphael can stand in.
Point of no return
The Dung Eater invades at the outer moat.
Summary
If he isn't tied up yet, keep talking and resting.

About this guide

Expect about 230 hours over three runs, in a game where bosses take practice. This route uses no save backups. Run 1 collects everything in the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, and takes about 170 of those hours. NG+ (about 40) and NG++ (about 20) are shorter runs for the other two endings and the other quest branches, with tougher enemies and some bosses to beat again for remembrance trades. Random drops and free-choice NPC kills never count toward 100%.
