Ashina Reservoir: the prologue

The opening climb to Kuro: your sword, your gourd, and the plan for the four cycles.
Four cycles on one save

This guide plays four cycles in a row and never asks you to copy a save: cycle 1 ends in Purification (sections 1 to 25), cycle 2 in Return, cycle 3 in Immortal Severance and cycle 4 in Shura. Each ending closes its cycle and the game autosaves, so every item an ending needs is set up before the point that would lock it.

What carries into the next cycle

Attack Power, Vitality, Posture, gourd charges, tools and their upgrades, learned skills, Sen, skill points and almost every item come with you. The exceptions are Mibu Breathing and the Mortal Draw arts (earned again with the Corrupted Monk and the Mortal Blade), the Mortal Blade itself and a few key items. NPCs, quests and the world reset, the Offering Box empties, and only the Prayer Beads, Gourd Seeds and tool items you skipped wait in the world again; the ones you took become filler loot.

The game opens in the Ashina Reservoir. Climb to the Moon-view Tower and find Kuro; the prologue is a single path, and nothing in it can be missed.

Leader Shigenori Yamauchi

He is the prologue's mini-boss. He drops no Prayer Bead, so he is not a checklist line.

The Genichiro duel is meant to be lost

The fight with Genichiro that closes the prologue is scripted: losing it moves the story on. It does not count as his kill and gives no Memory; the real fight comes much later, at the top of Ashina Castle.

Dilapidated Temple

Wolf wakes in the hub with a new arm. Meet the people who stay here for the cycle.
Who is at the temple

The Sculptor turns tool items into prosthetic tools, and upgrades them once he has the Mechanical Barrel. Emma trades Gourd Seeds for extra gourd uses. Hanbei spars with you and stands by the Offering Box, which sells the unique items of holders who are gone (it glows when stocked and empties at NG+). The Kind-faced Buddha takes the bell charms that open Hirata Estate.

Dragonrot

Dying for good (respawning at an idol instead of resurrecting) can make an NPC sick, and a sick NPC's quest stalls: Kotaro, Jinzaemon, Doujun, Anayama and the Blackhat Badger all need curing before their next step. The Sculptor always falls ill first, which starts Emma's cure; one Dragon's Blood Droplet used at an idol cures everyone, so keep one in hand. Dragonrot never kills an NPC.

Ashina Outskirts: the Gate Path

The first stretch of the Outskirts: the Shinobi Arts tree, General Kawarada, the first tool, the first Memorial Mob and the bell charm for Hirata Estate.

Leave the temple for the Ashina Outskirts and work up to the Outskirts Wall - Gate Path idol. The Shinobi Esoteric Text comes with your first skill point, so this guide opens the Shinobi Arts tree here; buy its skills whenever points allow, in the order below.

Fast travel

Travel between idols opens once you rest at your second Sculptor's Idol, the Ashina Outskirts one.

Skill trees

The five trees hold 42 skills worth 125 skill points in all, and spent points can't be taken back, so buy as points allow and nothing is wasted. The two main wikis disagree on a few prerequisite links; this guide follows the stricter one, so the order shown always works.

One wiki says that if the charm is still with her when the Divine Dragon falls, she is found dead and Hirata Estate stays shut for the rest of the cycle. Take it on this first pass.
Point of no return
Beating the Divine Dragon. Every step up to the Father's Bell Charm must be done by then (Fandom and PowerPyx); Fandom's Purification page wants the Hirata fights done too, while Fextralife and Fandom's charm page let them wait, so the route clears them first. The Young Lord's Bell Charm is gone if not yet taken (Fandom only). Rice for Kuro and, by the strictest reading, the rest of the Return chain close (cycle 2's business). Kawarada, Tenzen, Shikibu and the castle Masanaga leave, their beads and Kawarada's seed going to the Offering Box (2,200 sen; Fandom's seed page says 2,400); Isshin dies and his Sake talk goes with him.
Summary
In a wrecked house between the Gate Path and Stairway idols, an old woman takes Wolf for her son and gives him the charm. It opens Hirata Estate at the temple's Kind-faced Buddha.

Leave the looter alive

Anayama the Peddler is looting in Hirata and drops a hint about treasure in a three-story pagoda. Don't kill him: he would also vanish from his Outskirts shop, and his Phantom Kunai would then only sell from the Offering Box.

Pot Noble Harunaga

Harunaga sits on the land to the right of the bridge from the Dragonspring idol and trades goods for Treasure Carp Scales. Hirata holds seven scales in all; save them for him.

Ashina Outskirts: Gyoubu and the Tengu

The Chained Ogre and General Tenzen guard the stairway; past them the road leads to the Ashina Castle Gate Fortress, where Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa waits. Sunken Valley

Take the Mushin Esoteric Text from the Tengu at the Great Serpent Shrine, sweep Under-Shrine Valley for a seed and a bead, then clear the gun fort: Snake Eyes Shirafuji, the Long-arm Centipede Giraffe and the Large Fan for Divine Abduction.

Sunken Valley starts at the Great Serpent Shrine idol behind Ashina Castle and drops through Under-Shrine Valley to the gun fort. The Gun Fort Shrine Key from section 9 opens the shrine there, which is both the Giraffe's arena and the only way on into Sunken Valley Passage.

Run the invasion checklist before this fight

PowerPyx's and GamerGuides' main text tie the first invasion to killing both the Corrupted Monk and the Guardian Ape, though PowerPyx's author later said the item pickups are what count. The route has already done everything section 17 lists, but check it now if anything was skipped.

Leave the Lotus for now

A new idol appears after the fight, and the Lotus of the Palace sits in the alcove behind it. Picking it up starts the first invasion, so leave it until section 17; Fextralife's wording implies it is a separate pickup rather than an automatic reward, but no site says so outright.

What the Ape's death changes

In Ashina Depths, the Poison Pool camp is now wrecked and cannon users replace its snipers. The Headless Ape now waits before the Hidden Forest; it is the next section.

Before the first invasion

One last check of everything the first invasion moves or closes, then the Lotus of the Palace: the pickup that sends the Interior Ministry into Ashina Castle.
Checklist before the Lotus

Matsumoto and Jinsuke Saze beaten (sections 7 and 9), or their beads end up in the Offering Box. Gyoubu's Broken Horn taken from the Reservoir gatehouse (section 8). The Badger's Anti-air Deathblow Text and Iron Fortress bought, and the Badger never struck. The Tengu's rat task reported (section 7) and the Mushin Esoteric Text taken (section 15). Kuro's eavesdrop and Emma's agreement done (section 14); their deadline is later, but this is the safe moment. The Mortal Blade and the Shelter Stone both in hand.

For the Sculptor's scene later

To change one moment in the Demon of Hatred fight: before the Great Shinobi Owl, give the Sculptor Ashina Sake, Monkey Booze and Unrefined Sake, beat Lady Butterfly and ask what the Buddha showed him. Once the invasion begins, eavesdrop on him and Emma and then talk to both; only Fandom describes this, and it adds dialogue, nothing more.

The Lotus starts the first invasion

Taking the Lotus of the Palace changes Ashina for the rest of the cycle. Fextralife counts the second incense ingredient alone, Fandom adds the Mortal Blade; with both already held, the pickup is the trigger either way.

The Headless Ape

Back down to Ashina Depths, where the Guardian Ape has risen again without its head. Sever it with the Mortal Blade for two beads, a Memory and Bestowal Ninjutsu, then kill the Shichimen Warrior that follows for the Malcontent's Ring.

With the Guardian Ape dead, its headless body now waits in the Guardian Ape's Burrow in Ashina Depths, on the road between the Poison Pool and the Hidden Forest. Warp to an Ashina Depths idol: the invasion locked only the castle's idols.

Ashina Castle invaded: the Owl's choice

Walk the invaded castle to wake its idols, beat the three new mini-bosses, then meet the Owl on the tower roof and Break the Iron Code. His Aromatic Branch completes Kuro's incense and opens the way to Fountainhead Palace.

Interior Ministry troops and shinobi dogs now hold the castle and its gate, Nightjars sit on the Old Grave and monkeys line the path to the Great Serpent Shrine. Three mini-bosses have moved in for the occasion, and the Owl waits on the roof where you fought Genichiro.

Wake the castle idols again

Every Ashina Castle idol except Abandoned Dungeon Entrance has dropped off the travel list. Start there and commune with each idol as you reach it to bring it back.

What the Offering Box now holds

If Matsumoto or Saze was skipped, the Offering Box at the Dilapidated Temple now sells their beads (the sources disagree on the price), and an unbought Anti-air Deathblow Text is there for 2,200. If the Tengu left before giving the Mushin Esoteric Text, Isshin now hands it over in his room.

Pick the second option: Break the Iron Code

On the tower roof the Owl tells you to obey the Iron Code and forsake Kuro. Choose the second option, Break the Iron Code: the first, Obey, starts the Shura ending and ends this cycle. Fandom shows a chance to change your mind after Obey, but no other site does, so do not count on it.

Kuro and Emma come first

Emma's secret

Before going on to Fountainhead, follow Emma from Tomoe's Note to the Old Grave and back to the temple, and leave with the Father's Bell Charm. Every step must be done before the Divine Dragon dies.

Hirata Estate: the Father's Bell memory

Offer Emma's Father's Bell Charm at the Buddha only once the first Hirata memory is fully cleared, then work through the burning estate: two mini-boss beads, then Owl (Father) for his Memory and the Aromatic Flower.

The Kind-faced Buddha in the Dilapidated Temple takes bell charms back into Hirata. With the Father's Bell Charm it opens a second, altered memory of the estate, which starts on the bridge past the Bamboo Thicket Slope idol and ends where Lady Butterfly fought you.

Clear the first memory before you offer the charm

One Steam forum thread says the original Hirata memory can't be entered again once the Father's Bell memory is open; no wiki confirms or denies it. Tick every line of sections 4 and 6 first (the Flame Vent, Loaded Axe and Mist Raven materials, the Enshin, Juzou and hidden-wall beads, and the Floating Passage Text). Return deadlines sleep this cycle

Rice for Kuro and the Divine Child's chain also close with the Dragon, but Return is cycle 2's ending. Nothing of it is needed now.

The Divine Dragon starts the final invasion

Winning sends you back to a burning Ashina: Kuro is gone, Isshin dies, the Sculptor leaves his workshop, and Kawarada, Tenzen, Shikibu and the castle Masanaga vanish, their drops moving to the Offering Box. The Shuriken Wheel, Gyoubu's Broken Horn and the Phantom Kunai move to the box too; the route took all three long ago.

Ashina set ablaze

Take the Secret Passage Key from Emma, then sweep the burning castle, Outskirts and Reservoir: three new mini-bosses with the last beads, the Demon of Hatred, and three farewells that last only until NG+.

The Dragon's realm drops you back in Kuro's room, now empty but for Emma kneeling by Isshin's body. Red Guard troops fight Ashina's soldiers across the castle and the Outskirts, and red-eyed Nightjars hold the roofs.

Say no to NG+ at first

After the credits the game offers the next cycle. Decline it to keep roaming this world, then start cycle 2 whenever you are ready from the Dilapidated Temple idol.

NG+ resets the world

Starting cycle 2 resets every NPC and world state and empties the Offering Box. You keep Attack Power, Vitality, Posture, gourd uses, tools, upgrades, skills, sen and almost every item; only beads, seeds and tools you never took stay in the world.

Cycle 2 (NG+): Return

Replay the story with the Divine Child's chain woven in: Rice for Kuro, both Holy Chapters, the two serpent viscera and the Frozen Tears, all before the Divine Dragon. Send Kotaro to the Halls, give Jinzaemon his own ending, build the last two Lazulite upgrades, and hand Kuro the Frozen Tears for Return.
What cycle 2 is for

This NG+ run plays the Return ending, and enemies hit harder than in cycle 1. Any bead, seed or tool you missed still waits in the world; the ones you took are now Bundled Jizo Statues or Divine Grass, and mini-bosses already beaten drop Heavy Coin Purses instead.

Kuro's Charm

At your first meeting Kuro offers to take his charm back. Handing it over adds chip damage through blocks in exchange for about 20% more experience and sen (Fextralife); it is optional and no trophy cares (see the 2020 update appendix).

Empty your Rice first

Eat or give away every Rice and Fine Snow you carried over before the Divine Child starts asking for help. Fextralife alone says spare rice stalls her sickness step, but it costs nothing to follow.

This guide follows the wikis' main-boss list: Gyoubu, Lady Butterfly, Genichiro, the Folding Screen Monkeys, the Guardian Ape and the Headless Ape, both Corrupted Monks, the Great Shinobi Owl, Owl (Father), the Divine Dragon, the Demon of Hatred, Emma with Isshin Ashina, and Isshin, the Sword Saint. GIGA gives a much larger count that seems to fold in mini-bosses, and the three Inner bosses of the 2020 update are assumed not to count. If the trophy doesn't pop, see the bosses appendix.

Whether you can decline NG+ and keep roaming after the Shura ending is unconfirmed; Fandom's NG+ page implies you can. Either way the save is done, and the 2020 update appendix covers what is left to play for fun.

Bosses and mini-bosses

Every boss and mini-boss fight, where and when it happens, what it drops and where this guide fights it.

Seventeen boss fights stand in the game, counting the scripted prologue duel that Wolf is meant to lose. No single cycle reaches them all: the last two rows exist only on a Shura cycle, and obeying the Iron Code removes everything marked Kuro for that cycle. Boss kills stay counted across New Game Plus, so this route meets the whole list over its four cycles.

How many bosses?

Sources disagree on the count. Fandom's boss category lists 14 and leaves out Emma and Genichiro, Way of Tomoe; Fextralife lists 14 base-game bosses (Emma and Isshin Ashina as one) plus three Inner bosses from the 2020 update; Samurai Gamers counts 16 fights. GIGA's figure of 31 bosses for Man Without Equal most likely folds in mini-bosses and is not used here.

Mini-bosses do not count toward Man Without Equal; only the main bosses do. Most of them still matter, because 27 of the 40 Prayer Beads come from mini-bosses (two more come from the Headless Ape). A few leave with the story and move their bead to the Offering Box at the Dilapidated Temple for a price; the two in the Father's Bell memory of Hirata have no such fallback.

Sculptor's Idols

Every Sculptor's Idol by area, and which ones the invasions take off the travel list.

Sculptor's Idols are the rest points and fast-travel stops. None is needed for a trophy, but Ashina Traveler and the route both lean on reaching every area, and an idol is the quickest proof that you have. Travel opens once you rest at a second idol.

The total is disputed. Fextralife lists 55 idols; Fandom lists 49, because it drops the six idols that carry the name of their area (Ashina Outskirts, Ashina Castle, Senpou Temple Mt. Kongo, Sunken Valley, Ashina Depths and Fountainhead Palace). Several of those six are confirmed by name in walkthroughs, so this guide follows the 55. One idol's name is also disputed: Fextralife writes Ashina Castle Fortress where Fandom and PowerPyx write Ashina Castle Gate Fortress.

The first invasion

When the first invasion begins, every Ashina Castle idol except Abandoned Dungeon Entrance drops off the travel list. Walk to each one and rest there again to bring it back.

Points of no return

Every point of no return on this route, in order, with the checklist lines each one closes.

Each row is a moment that closes something for the rest of its cycle. The last column lists the checklist lines it locks out; finish those first. A soft lock moves the reward to the Offering Box or another seller instead of removing it, and the trigger text says so where it applies.

Points of no return in route order
SectionCycleTriggerLocks out
6. Hirata Estate: the Hidden Temple and Lady Butterfly1 (Purification)Defeating Lady Butterfly. Inosuke's mother dies, Inosuke follows on the next visit, and his Snap Seed is lost.Inosuke Nogami
9. Ashina Castle: the Upper Tower and Genichiro1 (Purification)Beating Genichiro on the castle tower roof and then hearing Isshin name the Mortal Blade. It is a soft lock: Fujioka moves to the Dilapidated Temple by himself (whether his Nightjar Beacon Memo is still offered is unknown), the Tengu moves to the Great Serpent Shrine, and the Main Hall monk's Holy Chapter: Infested ends up at the bottom of the Temple Grounds pond, where the Return cycle collects it. Sources place the monk's cutoff anywhere from the kill to the Isshin talk, so treat the kill as the line.Fujioka the Info Broker
17. Before the first invasion1 (Purification)Picking up the Lotus of the Palace with the Shelter Stone and the Mortal Blade already held. Sources split on the exact trigger (the second ingredient, both ingredients plus the Mortal Blade, or the Corrupted Monk and Guardian Ape kills), so the route arrives with all of them done. Every Ashina Castle idol except Abandoned Dungeon Entrance drops off the travel list until it is walked to again; Matsumoto and Saze leave and their beads go to the Offering Box (Fandom 1,500 sen each; Fextralife 2,200 for Matsumoto, and no fallback for Saze); the Anti-air Deathblow Text moves to the box at 2,200; and the Tengu leaves the Great Serpent Shrine. By the strictest reading the Reservoir gatehouse, and the Loaded Spear's material in its chest, are shut off too.Loaded Spear; Prayer Bead: Ashina Elite - Jinsuke Saze
19. Ashina Castle invaded: the Owl's choice1 (Purification)Choosing Break the Iron Code and beating the Great Shinobi Owl. By the strictest reading (Fandom's Hirata Estate page; Fextralife, PowerPyx and Fandom's Purification page allow until the Divine Dragon) this closes Kuro's eavesdrop and Emma's agreement. It also shuts the Shura branch for this cycle: the Emma and Isshin Ashina fights, One Mind and the Shura ending wait for cycle 4.Kuro's resolve; Emma: Kuro must not die
21. Hirata Estate: the Father's Bell memory1 (Purification)Offering the Father's Bell Charm at the Kind-faced Buddha. By a single forum report the first Hirata memory then closes for the rest of the cycle, so whatever is still in it is treated as lost: the three tool materials, Enshin's, Juzou's and the hidden-wall beads, and Harunaga's Floating Passage Text.Flame Vent; Loaded Axe; Mist Raven; Prayer Bead: Shinobi Hunter Enshin of Misen; Prayer Bead: Juzou the Drunkard; Prayer Bead: Hirata hidden wall; Floating Passage
23. Before the Divine Dragon1 (Purification)Beating the Divine Dragon. Kawarada, Tenzen, Shikibu and the castle Masanaga leave, their beads and Kawarada's seed going to the Offering Box (2,200 sen; Fandom's seed page says 2,400); Isshin dies and his Sake talk goes with him.Father's Bell Charm; Young Lord's Bell Charm; Emma: Tomoe's Note; Emma at the Old Grave; Emma and the Sculptor; Offer the Father's Bell Charm; Prayer Bead: Lone Shadow Masanaga (Hirata); Prayer Bead: Juzou the Drunkard (rematch); Owl (Father); Memory: Foster Father; Aromatic Flower; Head Priest of Mibu Village
25. The Sword Saint and Purification1 (Purification)Starting cycle 2 (NG+), from the post-credits prompt or the Dilapidated Temple idol. Everything this cycle has not finished is gone with its world: the Badger's balloon, Anayama's Promissory Note, Emma's Recovery Charm and the Offering Box stock. Mibu Breathing, the Mortal Blade and the Mortal Draw arts are re-earned; Attack Power, Vitality, Posture, gourd uses, tools, upgrades, other skills, sen, skill points and unspent Treasure Carp Scales carry over.Emma: the Recovery Charm; Blackhat Badger: the Mibu Pilgrimage Balloon; Anayama: the Promissory Note
26. Cycle 2 (NG+): Return2 (Return)Giving Kotaro the Red and White Pinwheel, sending him to Anayama or Doujun, or using Divine Abduction on him before he has the White Pinwheel. The Halls branch and its Taro Persimmon are gone for the cycle.Kotaro (Halls branch)
26. Cycle 2 (NG+): Return2 (Return)Beating O'Rin of the Water before Jinzaemon has reached the Water Mill path and been spoken to. His Reservoir and Water Mill steps are gone for the cycle, and with them Jinza's Jizo Statue.Jinzaemon at the Reservoir; Jinzaemon at the Water Mill
26. Cycle 2 (NG+): Return2 (Return)Beating the Divine Dragon in cycle 2. Rice for Kuro can no longer be given (Fextralife, Fandom, GamerGuides); Fandom and PowerPyx close every other step of the Divine Child's chain and the Frozen Tears with it, while Fextralife lets the Tears wait (disputed; the guide takes the earlier deadline). The Divine Child's Rice; Cure the Divine Child; Rice for Kuro; Holy Chapter: Infested; The Divine Child: Holy Chapter: Infested; Holy Chapter: Dragon's Return; Fresh Serpent Viscera; Dried Serpent Viscera; The Divine Child: both viscera; Frozen Tears
28. Cycle 4 (NG+3): Shura4 (Shura)Obeying the Iron Code on the castle tower roof (Fandom, PowerPyx, Fextralife). The cycle ends after Emma and Isshin Ashina, and the Kuro path is gone for it: Fountainhead, the Lapis, Emma's upgrades, Dragon Flash and the other endings. With cycles 1 to 3 complete, nothing on this checklist is locked.nothing on the checklist

Starting New Game Plus is the largest point of no return of all: anything the cycle left unfinished waits for the next one, but quest lines and endings restart from the beginning.

Trophies and achievements

All 34 trophies and achievements, their grades and where this guide earns each one.

Sekiro has one list of 34 on every platform: the same names on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam, with the Sekiro achievement on Steam and Xbox standing where PlayStation has its platinum. There is no Switch version. PlayStation splits them into 1 platinum, 4 gold, 11 silver and 18 bronze; on Xbox the Gamerscore follows the grade (70, 60, 30 and 20) for 1,000 in all. Steam hides 23 of them until earned. Nothing online, no difficulty setting and nothing from the 2020 update is needed.

Disputed wording

Two trophies read differently by source. Which Corrupted Monk earns Corrupted Monk is split (see its row). For Master of the Arts, Fextralife says any one combat art, while PowerPyx, Fandom and GIGA say the final skill of any one tree; the guide follows the majority and earns it with Ashina Cross, the last skill of the Ashina Arts tree.

The 2020 update (optional)

The free October 2020 update adds boss rematches, four single-life boss rushes with three new Inner bosses, and three outfits. None of it counts toward 100% and no trophy needs it.
What the update is

App Ver. 1.05 (29 October 2020 in Japan, a day earlier in the West), with 1.06 fixing lock-on and Inner Genichiro bugs a few weeks later: play on 1.06. It added Reflection of Strength, the Gauntlets of Strength, Change Form outfits and Remnants. Every line here is optional and no trophy depends on any of it.

How a Gauntlet of Strength works

Start one at any Sculptor's Idol. You get one life: dying or quitting ends the run, and an idol between fights lets you rest, buy emblems or carry on. Attack Power is fixed by the mode, and only the last boss of a gauntlet gives a Memory. The unlock rule for each gauntlet below comes from Fandom alone; Fextralife only says they open after an ending.

Summary
The end of the Gauntlet of Strength: Severance, after the Guardian Ape, the Great Shinobi Owl, the True Monk and Genichiro, Way of Tomoe. It needs Owl (Father) beaten and an ending done, so it opens after cycle 1.

Who is missing, and who joins

The Folding Screen Monkeys and the Divine Dragon are in no gauntlet, though both can be refought in Reflection of Strength. Fandom alone says each Inner boss joins the Reflection list once its gauntlet unlocks.

Bell Demon and Kuro's Charm

Two optional challenge toggles with no trophy effect. The Bell Demon (rung at the Bell Demon's Temple in Senpou Temple) makes enemies hit harder and drop more items, and starting a new cycle clears it. From the first NG+ on, Kuro offers to take back his Charm at your first meeting: a harder cycle with chip damage through blocks, for a little more XP and sen.

Remnants are out of scope

The update's online Remnants (short recordings and messages left for other players) are not covered by this guide.

About this guide

Expect a hard action game built on parrying, with no difficulty setting and bosses that take practice. The route runs four playthroughs, one per ending, and enemies grow tougher each cycle.
